It’s one of the questions that I ask nearly every person that comes to me looking to create online, recurring income through the membership or subscription-based model.
How much monthly recurring income would allow you to do the work you truly love, while also having the time freedom as well? I’ve heard all sorts of numbers after asking that. I’ve heard people say $200,000 a month. Does anyone really need $200,000 a month to be able to focus time and energy on what they truly want to do?
I’ve heard some low numbers as well. Some people are so desperate to get out of what they are currently doing that just a little bit of recurring income that doesn’t involve trading time for money would be the head start that they desire.
But there is one number that is brought up more than any.
$10,000 a month.
If they could bring in $10,000 a month in recurring online income, they could pretty much stop doing work they don’t want to do, or leave the job that is paying the bills. Now, this isn’t a ceiling. With time freedom, and the bills paid in a much less labor-intensive way, it could be the floor with unlimited income potential.
Meaning, you’d have a base income that allows you to not chase clients. You’d have a “one to many” business model where you no longer work on a client by client basis, and you can do in a few hours a week what used to take a full week of work. With that, if you desire growth (income and impact), you have the time to do it and the financial freedom to move forward as well.
$10,000 a month. It’s what’s stated over and over again.
Steven Covey, in his classic book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, discusses the idea of beginning with the end in mind. Yet it’s quite shocking how few people actually begin what they are doing with the actual end in mind.
In the simplest terms- is what you are doing taking you where you want to go?
You would be stunned by how many people say that it isn’t. This topic fascinates me. I could ask questions about it all day long. How the human mind works in regards to how we choose to work and live our lives is one of the most interesting subjects that I could think of.
Why is this so difficult for so many?
I believe part of it is because we are rarely guided to not only focus on what we truly want to be doing, but to also create an actionable and tangible plan to get there. As Zig Ziglar famously said, “If you aim at nothing, you’ll hit it every time.” Too many of us are aiming at nothing in particular, aside from just trying to get by.
But what if we could change that? What if we could empower people to dream about what they want? What if we could use their skills, interests and talents to help others get what they want? And by doing so, we get what we want as well?
I am going to be bringing you stories in the upcoming weeks and months that will get rid of all of your excuses as to why you can’t do this as well. My friend Heather Lahtinen told me about one of her friends who is in a membership that teaches handstands, and it’s incredibly profitable. My friend Ben Killoy told me about a membership that is- get this- a Murder Mystery Quilting membership. Yeah, you read that correctly. And it has thousands of paying members.
Are you thinking a little bit differently about your interests, skills and passions?
- 200 people paying you $50 a month is $10,000 a month.
- 100 people paying you $100 a month is $10,000 a month.
- 500 people paying you $20 a month is $10,000 a month.
It’s not that it’s not possible. It’s that we’re not even thinking about it. And we’re not thinking or learning how to do it.
I hope that I’m getting you to think a little differently today.
